Minor Annoyances – On Bargains and Cheap Thrills

I possibly am guilty of what I am going to moan about.

You know how when you compliment someone on their shoes/ shirt/ earrings/ table lamp, and the other person jumps and tells you, “Oooh – I got it for 3 pounds/ 40 rupees/ 4 dollars”, or some other such mindnumbingly small figure, do they realize how annoying they sound?

Especially if they remember only how much they bought it for, but their memory fails them when it comes to remembering where they bought it? Or they give you this highly general response like Khan Market/ Spitalfields/ dinky suburb of London? Look, if you tell me you bought something for dirt cheap, I don’t expect GPS coordinates, but some idea of where you got it.

Otherwise, I don’t believe you. I think you actually bought it for 20 times that price, and feel foolish. Or you think you’re being very cool and want to tell me how well you bargain.

Tell me where you got it, or don’t tell me how much it was for. Otherwise, I am just going to tell you that I think you should have paid far less. Okay?

  1. My mum used to say that people wouldn’t tell me where they bought their things, simply because they were selfish and did not want me to get the same things. I believe in my mum’s wisdom and I think it makes sense, particularly if they got it for cheap. They obviously don’t want the whole world to get it as well… Hmmmm I guess…

  2. hehe.I’m never this nice.

I usually tell them in a grave voice that they have paid too much and they could easily have gotten it for half of what they spent.

Nammaal mudindha desa thondu funda(I know, not at all nice :D)

    I possibly am guilty

It is possible I am guilty
or I may have been guilty.

    Otherwise, I don’t believe you

    If not, I cannot …

No, since she isn’t around, I thought I’d say it.

  4. oh, talk to me and compliment me more! Am brutally frank on the price and the where, right down to the time and season too!

I know, am blessed with an unblemished memory. :|

  5. LOL! :D yeah story of my life:D

  6. corollary :
people who invariably respond to your andwer to their question about how much you got something for by saying things like “wow, very expensive”, or “arre you missed a good deal”, or “man, you guys are doing well eh?”

    bah.

  7. You are welcome to compliment me ;-) I will smile oddly and say thank-you, with nary a word about where I bought it or how much for, much as I remember both what with a tiny wardrobe that I possess.

I can however, if pressed, tell you the per-wear cost of some things but that is how I justify spending good money on stuff I then use constantly. :-P

PS: Something tells me if people simply accepted your compliments, you will find a way to blog about that too :-) No?

  8. Just curious, you know I really like that purple woollen beret you have on in a photo (taken on a train – yes, told you my memory is elephantine). Now where did you buy that from and does it impart static to your hair and can you show me how to wear it with my hair length? Serious.

“—-Will tell them they paid far too much for it–” Good one–that ought to shut them up once and for all!
