Sholay on YouTube

Can the whole Hindi speaking world be divided into those who’ve seen Sholay once and those who’ve seen it more than once? I think I come in the more than 10 times subset of the latter group. And this is why I love YouTube, thanks to which I am watching certain parts a lot more times. This has to be one of the priceless parts, when the Big B goes to Basanti’s Aunt to ruin any chances of Veeru and Basanti getting married.

Other marvellous bits. Veeru’s Suicide from Water Tank Scene, the Jailer from Angrezon Ka Zamaana and the one where Basanti learns to pull the trigger. I was looking for the bit when Basanti takes Jai and Veeru from the station to the village but couldn’t find it. Priceless.

For those who would like to see the entire movie in bits – you can start with the fabulous Part 1. There are sixteen parts in all. The print is superb. Enjoy!

Yun ki hamein be-fizool ki baat karne ki aadat toh hai nahin. (Yeah, Right!)

  1. And then there is the alternate ending – http://www.indianpad.com/story/12176

  2. The whole Hindi-speaking world can be divided into three: those who’ve seen Sholay once, those who’ve seen it multiple times and those who watch parts of the film again and again on YouTube.

Yes, someone should upload that tonga ride sequence. To watch Amitabh stuff his ears with cotton is zimbly priceless.

  3. And what of the fourth kind – the ones who have seen the movie multiple times, know the dialogues by-heart, own and have read the Anupama Chopra book on the making of the movie, have seen the alternate ‘Director’s Cut’ version multiple times, and can play spot-the-differences between the two? They exist too, you know. Please to treat them with kindness and compassion. They are human too. Well, sort of anyway. *shuffles away quietly avoiding people’s eyes*

  4. djakeel: Thanks!

km: Exactly. That has to be my favourite – and the flourish with which he says “Tumhara naam kya hai Basanti!”

Megha: See, we need to look up records of Kumbh Mela around our childhood years – We do.

  5. I have seen Sholay half a dozen times, but don’t remember too many dialogues – that puts me in category 2, I guess.

BTW, I have actually done the water tank bit myself

When I was seeing her, the watertank in our institute was our favorite place to hang out. In fact, we kissed for the first time sitting on top of the watertank. One Friday night, there was a party at the institute, we were both drunk and we had a fight while we were at the watertank. As she started walking down the staircase, I shouted to her, like Dharmendra in Sholay:

    I love you! Don’t leave!

I was loud enough to be heard above the music at the party and very soon, we had chowkidaars and friends coming to the watertank to check us out. Eventually, a friend convinced me to come down and, everybody went back to the party. As you can imagine, she was embarassed beyond description, and so was I next morning.

    ROTFL, no?

  6. Neha: The be-fizool ki baatein sequence is at the end of part 4 and beginning of part 5!
