Sometimes you read something so absurd that you laugh instead of letting out a deep wtf. Now the poor lady wants to rant, and who doesn’t like to let out a verbose burp full of disdain. But when you are in the business of (apparently) reporting news, and indulge in such comedy, one is forced to consider – how good can writing such crap be for someone professionally?
I am not even going to point out to the sheer subjectiveness of the values the author highlights. Really, why exactly is knowing which year India became independent more important than Valentine’s Day. Now suppose you were to lament some sort of low general knowledge and stuck to just saying that so and so percent have no idea about who got Independence when, it’s different. But what point exactly are you trying to make when you actually attempt to highlight that the youth is in someway obsessed with the trivial.
Now for something absolutely comic
The guru-shishya parampara has been overthrown. The Rang De Basanti generation, maniacally repeating that ‘the system sucks’, demonstrates its contempt for the law.
This, after she says that the youth is too patriarchal. Ahem. Madam. Pliss to notice. Guru-Shishya parampara etc. is epoch of patriarchy. Of caste lines. Of what is accessible and what is not. And where exactly does this woman live? Who has she heard repeating “The System Sucks”. And what if they do? And how exactly does a movie that is some months old define a generation?
See, if this was on some crappy blog, I would have ignored it. But this comes from the Mainsteam Media and all. *Snicker*
Sagarika Ghose. You should be careful. This awful generation is about to take your job away.
The System does suck, no doubt about it. And yes, I do agree with Sagarika Ghose’s viewpoint… BUT only to an extent. Obviously, there will be different kinds of people in a 65% of youth filled country. Sagarika Ghose is only talking about one side of the coin. And everyone knows there are two sides to it :)
yes, sagarika’s article is wanting. not sure from which ivory tower she is talking. it smacks of pseudo intellectualism, trying to capsulize the 600 million or so numbers into victims of the ‘system’
what system?
who are these youths? are they the priviliged ones, who will not work to get the education that their parents have paid. are these the ones, who gobble up bollywood movies for breakfast and regurgitate them into vile actions as lunch?
it is commentators like sagarika, with their superficial overview of the society, but with a elite readership which is equally shallow, is the bane of our society. :(
Oh no! the kids have power! And they are getting angry! We never did that!
*cue moral panic*
Since when did these people – Ms Ghose, Ms Dutt et al, get to write editorials and opinion columns?
I’d rather read ‘murasoli’…
Yeah she is a bit of an idiot…..and who wants her opinion anyway!?
sag-a-reek-a ghose-writer? :D
Among the gen of “system sucks”, Ghose would be called as “Psecs” (pseudo-secularists with commie agenda). You know the kind of ppl who will open an umbrella in India if it rains in China…types. Anything “within” the system way of protesting is ok…but not otherwise. Police brutalities and such are part of the “system”…so it’s Ok. For Ghose’s who idolize the 70′s, all form of youth action should confirm to that “emergency era” of protest as though it’s the mother of all protests. Otherwise, today’s youth is “mislead” and suffers from tunnel-vision.
Yaa…system sucks
true.. Its a long one and I couldnt go thru that fully.. its a poor one..
she is just so against of the youth.. like our politician says – Im against whatever u say..
But what Im thinking is, who was the editor!!
your cooment”Really, why exactly is knowing which year India became independent more important than Valentine’s Day. “shows how shallow u are.
yes it does matter if some indian does nto know which date india got independence.
tyhe very fact that u frivolously dared to put that question smacks of your superficiality of what attitude and mind-noother nation would tolerate that sort of antinational rubbish.
LOL! That was one of the most hilarious pieces I have read in a long while. And we are supposed to be grateful to a generation that produced stalwarts (sic) like Arun Jaitely and Sitaram Yechury? What have those worthies done for India? That generation of politicians is completely responsi
Yeah, those uppity little kids need to be shown their place. Really. And then everyone can go back to the likes of Ms.Ghose because what she says is the gospel.
