MS Subbulakshmi’s music online

A lot of people get to this blog googling for links to finding MS Subbulakshmi’s music online. Well, a couple of quick links then. One source is Music India Online’s MS Subbulaksmi collection. Raaga also has some songs listed. There are some downloads at Coolgoose. Search for Subbulakshmi and a list should pop up.

While you’re at it, may one also suggest DK Pattammal. And maybe even Maharajapuram Santhanam.

  1. I am a big fan of M.S. I don’t think anybody can ever sing Venkateswara Suprabhatam like her. Her other works such as Balaji Pancharatna Mala or Nama Ramayanam are immortal works.

I have to disagree with you when it comes to Maharajapuram. His name shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same post that talks about MS.

He had a great voice. His command over the swaras was unbeatable. His knowledge of ragas and his ability of being able to sing them was awesome. BUT… his works don’t have the sincerety that MS has. He seems to ‘sing’ the songs not ‘feel’ them. And I absolutely hate his diction and pronounciation of Telugu. The way he breaks the words without any respect for the meaning is despicable. I am sorry to fray someone you like but that’s my opinion.

  2. What, no Aruna Sairam?

  3. Or Mani Iyer?

  4. Twisted DNA: What do you mean by disagree with me? Did I say he’s great or at par with MS Subbulakshmi in the first place? For one thing – people react to music differently – I don’t quite agree with your understanding of M.Santhanam – however, you are entitled to your opinion. For me music is also about associations, not just about technique. So what are you diagreeing with – do you think people shouldn’t listen to him at all? Or that he shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as MSS or DKP?

km: This is NOT a reading list. It’s a serving suggestion. :)

    Vi: Ditto.

  5. You line: “While you’re at it, may one also suggest” implies that you put MS and Maharajapuram at the same par. I said that, very verbosely I suppose, I don’t consider him at the same level as MS. I don’t much about DKP, haven’t heard her much.
