A delightful collection of Amitabh Bachchan’s Hindi movie publicity posters. Wonderful! Treat for the eyes. Broad brush strokes and a hint of green on the cheeks of heroines to make them look fair. (I learnt about this trick from a Billboard painter in Bombay.)
The shift towards printed screens covering Billboards when it comes to movies and publicity in the big cities is pretty much complete. The only posters one sees are of C-grade movies with highly suspect names. However, an excursion into the Andhra or Maharashtrian Mofussil and beyond over the last few years revealed that small posters were alive and thriving. Though none of them are prints of movie-art – just a collage of photographs and stills.
Waiting at the bus stop in the mornings to go to school was a little bit more entertaining because of the wall facing facing the bus stop. It was like a litmus test for posters. Some torn the next day, and some defaced with Sri Devi growing a moustache.
