Blogs and governance

Chester City Council has launched a new website to enable its 60 councillors to each have their own blog. And while initially it may seem like their blogs are records of meetings, and clubs attended – I guess things should get more interesting especially if they manage to push the idea of interactive governance. eGov has an article on this.

I know many of us may be very cynical about what a blog can do. But it’s dialogue made easy – and its archiving of public dialogue. Both are of crucial importance. Hhmm…. Now think of Laloo with a blog. It’d probably have striking visuals of dung cakes as emoticons!

  1. Was going to leave a comment on your previous post just saying I am in complete agreement and that women are superior because of the well honed strategies we have devised (through the ages) to cope with all the world/ god throws at us…. Imagine guys going through pregnancy! They can hardly manage a close shave without griping about it…..!!??

As for blogs for Indian leaders a la Lalu: I can only imagine he’d want to use it as a forum for propoganda or to gripe about the lack of space for his 200 cows in his new house! *Shudder* to think how tainted the blogosphere could become!

  2. Oh c’mon, it would make a great piece of (unintended) comedy!

It’s interesting. And I too think it would be a worthwhile effort.

Here is a from the Hindu that says the Mangalore police were also thinking of running a blog. It is expected to start anytime now.

In the report, it is stated that they are setting up their blog as an interface with the public — but they are also thinking of it as a substitute for their own full-blown website. Something tells me that they will love their blog so much that even after their website is up, the blog is likely to be on for at least a while. Of course, it all depends on how they run their blog.

I am not one of those who is cynical about blogs, btw. I think this could be a fantastic channel for communication between local government and citizens.

Make no mistake: the traffic to Laloo’s blog would probably cause Google’s server-farm to meltdown. Not kidding. I would be checking it every minute for updates.

  5. It’s a good idea. I can think of lots of things to tell my local council!

  6. Well I always find official blogs entertaining. Who ever thinks such blogs are mundane should visit blog circles of GM, MS, Boeing, Sun Microsystems. These guys have fun while working.

    Hi Neha,

Remember the comment from a few days ago about the report in the Hindu? The blog of the Dakshina Kannada Police is up and running. It was featured in the Tamil section of DesiPundit (Desika Pandithar?).

    Check it out.
