A major HR upheaval in the organisation today.
Yesterday, I commented to a friend my discomfort with the notion of ‘noble’ being attached to this profession. However, I did always somehow think that being in this profession meant that the attitudes would be more sensitive.
I am beginning to discover that is far from true. Lets be clear though, I didn’t expect the development set to be angels, like all human beings they have emotions, and react to situations.
I believe that sensitivity cannot be cultivated. You are not born sensitive either. It probably grows within during some formative years. It’s possible that we forget about this wired sensitivity over the years, and somebody rebuilds the circuit, but no social study course, no PhD, and no job can make you more sensitive. It can at the most help you articulate your concern. It can make you more aware of what you feel and why you feel.
The fundamental problem as regards working with organisations is that it is highly unlikely that the organisation is loyal to you at a personal level. Organisations don’t feel anything beyond paranoia and fear and jubilation. Loyalty is a matter of convenience. Unfortunately, as individuals, our jobs begin to merge with our identity. Perhaps it gets a little worse when we make career choices based on sheer interest. The passion guides the career path, and then the organisation enters the little orbit. So even as you are aware that your identity is and should be independent of what work you do, it isn’t. (Or is it?)
The hard part is to stay buoyant. Floating. And when the innards feel heavy, it is an almost impossible task. But then miniscule things sometimes come along and keeps the soul afloat! It isn’t so hard to be happy if you don’t let 98% of the world get to you. :-)
As Sri saar would say, ‘Acche logon ke saath accha hotha hai’. While that may raise issues about words like ‘Acche’, and on what basis I can categorize myself such, it is enough to make the moment pass.
Thought for the day : An organisation that isn’t loyal to you, doesn’t deserve your loyalty. The organisation doesn’t do you a favour by hiring you, it benefits atleast 5 times as much as it spends on you.
